By Faith Or By Effort?

I am waiting to hear about a job that I really want, for which I am very well-suited and that I am quite confident that I will get.

I am praying about it several times a day, and trying to keep in touch with the decision-maker.

But I am also thinking I ought to file for unemployment in case I don't get it, so that I can get some cash flow going. (it takes about 2 weeks to get your first check)

I worry that filing for unemployment benefits might suggest that I don't trust God to provide me with this ideal position.

Or maybe... you pray like God will handle it - and work as if you must do it alone.
Isn't that how we should handle all our prayers? Pray like He's in charge - but work like YOU are?

You said it perfectly. "you pray like God will handle it - and work as if you must do it alone."

You can pray all you want for God to give you a million dollars, but if you don't go out and work for it, you'll never make it. You can pray all you want for a husband, but if you never go out and meet people you'll never find one.

Pray for God's support, guidance, direction, and help. And then go do what you are supposed to do with Him at your side.

I think erinannie will remember this one: "They pray and they go". The leader of our church said that several years ago in a talk about faith. Faith without works is dead, right? You prepare for eventualities and have faith that the Lord will provide a way. He's not going to do much if you sit there like a lump. :) I hope your prayers are answered soon!

You have answered you own question, He does the impossible and we do what is within our reach. In my opinion it depends on many things; what kind of relationship you have with God, what kind of God do you believe in; we have to pray according to his will, we have to know his will, each person has a different purpose,I think He opens doors and He close those who are no good for us,to protect us, is not just the money you will earn(is good to pray that he would open doors) at the same time is perfect to move in the direction you think he is showing you, is good to have a plan, and do all you can do, also believing he is guiding you(opening the doors, closing, etc)it s about relationship.
If you have faith you will take action, fear could paralize people, and real faith do the opposite thing, but remember that faith is about things you don´t see.In my opinion we have to have faith that he will open the right doors, in your case you are doing everything you can and also praying for that job, can you do something else?, you have to believe he will open that door if is His will, and you can also fill out the unemployment form, I dont see any contradiction, the question I have is if this new jod will affect your relationship with God. Happy new year.

I agree with you and everyone else here. Pray like it depends on the Lord, work like it depends on you. Good luck!

Here's my take. If you were drowning in the ocean, and someone threw you a line, would you refuse it and say, "No thanks, I'm waiting on God to save me." Maybe an unemployment check is God throwing you a life line.

I believe it was St. Augustine who said...

"Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you."
